Amy Sydney
Amy is an experienced employment lawyer with a passion for client service and a tenacious yet practical attitude towards helping her clients achieve their commercial goals.
Becoming a lawyer more than 15 years ago, Amy began her legal career advising clients on commercial issues including intellectual property, governance, and business acquisition and sale before deciding to specialise in employment and workplace relations law.
At MV Law, Amy advises employees from all industries as well as businesses of all sizes on matters relating to the interaction between employers and their employees, from the commencement of employment right through to the end of the employment relationship and beyond. She regularly works with employees, independent contractors, business owners, general managers, human resources managers and directors to navigate workplace issues from engagement through to compliance with the National Employment Standards, awards and enterprise agreements through to investigations and Fair Work Proceedings such as unfair dismissal and bullying and harassment claims.
Amy has a unique understanding of business operations due to her time working as in-house counsel and company secretary for a family-operated hospitality group, where she was responsible for managing award compliance and associated legal issues for more than 100 employees across three distinct businesses. This commercial experience together with a passion for people – which was instilled in her early career working in services roles – is what sets Amy apart from other employment lawyers.
Amy began her career at MV Law back in 2004 when it was Meyer Vandenberg, but left the firm to support her family business in a legal, management and operations role. In the last decade, Amy has returned to the legal profession, holding a role as a Senior Legal Policy Officer and as a Principal Solicitor for the ACT Government Solicitor specialising in employment law. Amy has returned to MV Law with the 360° experience of commercial and government practice coupled with small-business operations.
Amy’s clients and colleagues recognise her for being personable, responsive, authentic and diligent. There are few problems Amy cannot solve, and she enjoys using her legal and people skills to find solutions that see her clients succeed.
